The Transparent Leader
Published in Paperback by Harvest House Publishers, Inc. (April, 2001)
Authors: Dwight L. Johnson, Tim LaHaye, and Dean Nelson
Average review score:

Seeing Clearly The Leaders of Today
Being a leader in today's world is not what it used to be. There was a time, when a leader was tough, rugged and quiet. That time is no more. It is time for leaders to let their guard down, to show their true selves, to lead by following and to lead by example. The Transparent Leader shows many of today's national leaders in this light. It shows them being transparent, vulnerable and initially with no protection. Along the same lines of Jesus, they step into the worlds of other people and lead them, ultimately showing the way to the one true God. It shows who these leaders were, the situations they were in and how they succeeded in becoming great leaders. All of them have one thing in common; they all know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

The text shows leaders who have failed, where they failed, and how they came to succeed. The leaders within the compilation tell their story, either via testimony or anecdote. Some open their entire lives to the reader so they can see the heart of the storyteller. Although the booklover might not be able to identify with all of the passages throughout the book, there is no doubt that more than one will hit the heart and soul of the reader.

Should this book be required reading for all future leaders of the world? I believe that it should. It offers inspiration to those people who are not yet world leaders and it offers a reality check for those who are in the top echelon of leadership.

What is True Leadeship?
Leadership can be defined as influencing others in a positive way to attain organizational goals, or put another way, getting things done by, with, and through people. The assumption is that effective leadership will foster acceptance of, and commitment to, organizational goals, generate a degree of enthusiasm for the task at hand, elicit voluntary cooperation, promote teamwork, and result in maximum levels of motivation and productivity on both an individual employee and group basis. Whether it be in business, sport, government, or a nonprofit or volunteer organization this is the challenge which faces everyone who assumes a leadership role. This book is a must for all who are in position of leadership. It is testimonial of 19 well known and successful men who have faced similar difficulties as others will face in their role as leaders. It will prepare them to learn from intensity, integrity, intelligence, determination, devotion, and dedication of these men in order to become spiritually, financially, and morally successful.

Real-Life Stories Foster Challenge & Inspiration
I've read plenty of books dealing with leadership...but none like this one. As the CEO of a 100-employee firm myself, I'm well aware of the tendency for those of us in leadership (and men in general) to suppress and contain our own struggles...often eventually to our own detriment.

This book provides a refreshing alternative view featuring several well-known and successful men revealing the freedom and power they have realized in their personal, spiritual, and business lives -- by transparently sharing their struggles, failures, and successes.

Though I was already aware of these concepts prior to reading the book, the real-life examples and willingness to share by these men are compelling - some of the stories even riveting - and all are an inspiration. It doesn't matter if you're a professional burger-flipper or the leader of thousands...at least some of the short accounts in this book are sure to speak to you.

Amazing Teacher
I have not read the book but am looking for a copy, but Nelson was my dorm father and an inspiring high school teacher. I'm sure if it's anything like Nelson it's amazing

Delightful characters, vivid imagery!
Lebo's book is a wonderful read-full of intense images and rich characters. Story and science blend in a captivating series of encounters with people and Nature as he pedals across a vast stretch of the American continent. Lebo and his characters offer historical knowledge, natural history, and a spectacular setting in a well written book. If you enjoy Abbey and Leopold put this on your reading list.

Deep and Witty
This is a wonderful collection of stories gathered by a man who made a remarkable bicycle journey through the American West. Humorous and touching anecdotes are weaved in among serious discussions of pressing environmental issues, and expressions of love for the beauty of the land. It is both inspirational and thought provoking in the finest tradition of Abbey's Desert Solitaire. Lebo combines his understanding of the human condition and love of the natural world in a way that celebrates the quirky magnificence of both. It has left me with a hunger to follow his example and design an adventure for myself!

How this book WILL change your life!!!!!
I feel that my life has been very fortunate; I have not lost anyone to violence. That doesn't mean that this book did not touch me. This work of undeniable and horrifying grief made me re-examine my priorities. How can I be unhappy, considering what hasn't happened to me? I highly recommend this book for everyone. It will move you, astound you, and make you cry. I wish to personally thank each of the contributors for having the courage to share their most painful experiences so that the rest of us can learn and grow. Be prepared to cry when you read this book, I highly suggest you set aside a few hours and a box of tissues. You cannot afford to miss reading(and passing on!!!) this book, it will change your life!!!!!

Thank you Traci Nelson
This book is a wonderful compilation of stories, poems, and essays written by people who have lost loved ones to violence. I, unfortunately, am one of the many people who submitted a story to this book. Traci Nelson has changed my life by doing this. After the murder of my friend, I was crushed, and I tried to do everything I could to help the situation. One day I received an email from Traci Nelson inviting me to write an essay for her book, and there was no way I could say no.

I have seen the book, and read many of the other entries, and it is simply amazing. All of these people have opened their hearts to share with anyone who reads thier stories. This book is a must-have especially for people who have lost loved ones to violence. It is also important for people who have not lost loved ones to violence to understand that these people are real, and these situations are real.

Author Review-
Waking To Tears touches a subject that few wish to discuss, losing a loved one to violence. Ms. Nelson compiled essays, stories and poems from across the world to bring awareness and healing to anyone who has lost a loved one to violence. Waking To Tears exposes the depths of souls filled with pain and grief of losing a loved one to violence. The experiences are different but the grief is not isolated, it is an overwhelming emotion that wakes you to tears. Ms. Nelson hopes to help other victims/survivors realize they are not alone in their quest for peace in their heart. She also attempts to educate society on the long-term effects of violence. Waking To Tears will touch the deepest parts of your heart and soul.

The Wave Principle of Human Social Behavior and the New Science of Socionomics
Published in Hardcover by New Classics Library (March, 1999)
Author: Robert R., Jr. Prechter
Average review score:

Spooky feeling of a breakthrough into the unknown
Imagine you were one of the first people to look through a telescope - and you suddenly found out that the sky was not merely wallpaper. You would have known that the discovery was a breakthrough, but what would happen would be spooky to think about.

That's how I feel reading Prechter's book about the new science of Socionomics. The telescope made sense of the jumble of lights in the night sky, as well as strange events like eclipses. The new science of Socionomics makes sense of a huge jumble of information in financial markets as well as strange events like crashes, manias, fads and fashions. The personality of markets and societies is linked directly to how our brains respond to certain types of input.

It is also a book that stirs up the back of your mind - are we really as independant in thinking as we imagine ourselves to be: how strongly are we influenced by the society around us? The book shows frightening evidence that our brains are hard wired to respond immediately to impulses stimulated by the human herd.

Overall, the book is like reading about the first observations from telescopes - it is a spooky glimpse into a world right in front of our faces that we've not understood until now. If you read it thoughtfully, the book will be both unsettling and inspiring in its implications.

Flat Earthers vs: Round Earthers
If you use Elliott Wave in your investment analysis you know it works. If you try to point this out to a non-waver you feel like the round earth advocates must have felt 500 years ago defending their position to the flat earthers. After all it does look flat; and stock charts do just look like a bunch of squiggly lines.

After reading this book you begin to understand the science that is at work in Elliott Wave Theory, and believe me, they are not just a bunch of squiggles. Mr. Prechter makes his case brilliantly.

Incredible book!
As someone who is extremely interested in how the brain works and why we 'do what we do', as "rational" human beings, I found this book to be extremely compelling. I simply could not put it down. Prechter takes a huge compilation of material (from neuroscience, psychology, fractal anaylsis to technical stock market analysis) and boils it down into a beautifully written and fascinating look at how our mind and society is shaped and guided by an underlying mathematical pattern that is the foundation for all living systems.

We are lead by Prechter through a basic understanding of Ralph N. Elliott's Wave Principle - a technical method of stock market analysis Elliott discovered during the 1930's - and come to find that this pattern is fractal based, and not only indicates where the NASDAQ is going to go tomorrow, but shows us where we will go as a society!

This book is a must read for anyone studying brain function, psychology, or philosophy AND for the beginning and seasoned trader! I wish I had found this type of information years ago.

When the Wind Stops

Authors: Charlotte Zolotow, Nelson, and Stefano Vitale
Average review score:

A Beautiful book about the continuing nature of life . . .
I found this to be a beautifully written & illustrated book about the renewal of each day. The story begins with a little boy sad to see the day end and his mother explaining to him that the day ends so night can begin. . . The prose is soothing and imaginative . . . the message is about how they day can end for you, but it begins again in another place for someone else. . . it seems to me to be a gentle way of talking about letting go. . . letting go of the day, of the season, of the wind, of things, so that these things can carry on in a different way. I think it is a great way for a child to begin to understand about the finite nature of life. Also, is addresses the immediate and strong feeling of my toddler of NO NIGHT NIGHTS!!! The prose is so soothing and imaginative it actually lulled my child to sleep. The illustrations are colorful and beautiful. An EXCELLENT book.

A Story That Clears the Fog on Difficult Concepts
In easy language with good illustrations, this book will help children to understand why the day has to end, where the wind goes when it stops, where the waves go when they break on the sand, where does the rain go, etc.

The story flows like a poem, yet offers insight into complex concpets, and demonstrates life's eternal evolution and motion.

Inspiring story of the circle of life!
This is a soothing, inspiring book that illustrates the truth and meaning of the eternal circle of life. It is a comfort book, and a spiritual revelation. A must for Pagan parents, and all parents. The illustrations are deep and beautiful.

Where Did Our Love Go?: The Rise & Fall of the Motown Sound
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (September, 1987)
Authors: Nelson George and George Nelson
Average review score:

The BEST Motown book
One of my smartest purchasing decisions was to pick up this work by Nelson George in June 1986 when it was still in hard cover. I've never let it out of my sight since. Time has proven it the precursor of a deluge: 'Dreamgirl,' & 'Supreme Faith' by Mary Wilson (1986, 1990), 'Temptations' by Otis Williams (1988), 'To Be Loved,' by Berry Gordy (1994), 'Inside My Life' by Smokey Robinson (1989), 'Dancing In The Street' by Martha Reeves (1994), and 'Between Each Line of Pain and Glory,' by Gladys Knight (1997), among others. I bought them all and I read them all. By far the worst, was the October 1993 work by Diana Ross, 'Secrets of a Sparrow,' which was quickly named the worst non-fiction work of the year by People magazine. I couldn't argue with them.

'Where Did Our Love Go,' on the other hand, proves a truth we discovered in the day of the very music it chronicles: no amount of tepid covers surpasses a towering original. Perhaps because Mr. George was not an insider at Motown in the 60s, his history of the company is so objectively good. I've read it many times in over 16 years, and haven't found a date or factual mistake.

And it is balanced. The wonderful music of those glory days in Detroit is given the respect and affection it deserves, as well as the how-it-came-about details. Mr. George acknowledges as most of us do, that Motown's 60s sound is timeless, and is going to outlive Berry Gordy, the artists whose names appeared on the labels, and we baby-boomers who were weaned on it.

Yes, the who-struck-John stories of disappointment are delineated fairly too: the career declines and /or disappointments of folks like Martha Reeves, Gladys Knight, Chuck Jackson, Marvin Gaye and, especially Florence Ballard. But unlike the recollections of the authors listed above, 'Where' is not told by a writer needing to come out smelling blameless or put-upon at the end.

All these years later, 'Where Did Our Love Go,' by Nelson George remains the single most essential biography of Motown Records you can own. Buy it anyway you can manage to, even used - just don't ask to borrow mine. Beyond it, there are two companion works you should also seek out for some fair and detailed 'inside' looks of Motown in those days: 'Divided Soul,' David Ritz' account of Marvin Gaye's life, which appeared first in 1985, and might have been helped in its excellence by the fact that its subject was no longer around to censor it or 'advise.' Finally, from 1989, J. Randy Taraborrelli's 'Call Her Miss Ross,' could likely be a dozen times more factual and objective than the 1993 work of the former Supreme herself could ever be!

Best book on motown I've read
Although a little short on photos (it was obviously not the authors' intention to be another photo book), this is in many ways the best book for someone really interested in the subject of Motown to own,in that the author pulls no punches. Other books on this record company/hit machine of the 60s & 70s suffered from censorship by the record company's head and his people.

This book does not suffer that hinderance, and it allows us to read what really went on behind the scenes. It was not such a happy family with Berry Gordy Jr. as the paternal head as it is often depicted.

An excellent book, both readable and informative, and well worth getting hold of for all fans of the music who want to know what really went on as the records were made and the tours were run.

Get this book!
Part of the success of Motown lies in Berry Gordy's tight control over public relations. Put simply, he would not cooperate with reporters until and unless he knew, and approved of, the nature of their stories in advance. In "Where Did Our Love Go", Nelson George breaks the mold. This is an unauthorized biography of the Motown Record Corp. George managed to circumvent Gordy's media chokehold and, thereby, come up with a picture quite different from the common myths. This results in two marvelous types of revelations throughout this book: (1) The "dirt" on Motown; and (2) the good, joyful, and uplifting things that we never knew. Get this book!

Willie

Authors: Willie Nelson, Edwin Shrake, and Bud Shrake
Average review score:

Proof: Better than Fiction!
I bought "Willie" years ago (and I like the old cover with the flag..don't know why they changed that) It's a big, thick book that's just crammed with proof that real life - if it's Willie's - is a whole lot better than any fiction novel. I loaned my copy out one too many times and it came up missing, so was glad to see it on here so I could get another one...only I had my old one so dog-earred, highlighted, etc...I hate having to go buy all those markers again, to do over;) When you get your copy, go to the index and ck it out....grab that highlighter pen before you even get started, here. I'm a truck driver, so I read this and that and here and there, before having a chance to read cover to cover. Then it turned into a reference book of Willie's Wisdom and all sorts of good stuff to good to forget. I kept it handy just to re-read some parts over and over. It's more than one book, somehow or other...yes, it's his autobiography - an All-American tale of rags to riches and all that; but, it's a whole lot more than that, too. If you like Willie, buy it. If you don't, I don't know why you're in here looking at it...but, if you like a dynamite story, or to read real-life accounts at all - you won't put this down, easily. What leaves me amazed is how anyone could cram that much living into the time period that book covers...he's lived nearly 20 more years since then...so I bought his new one, "Facts of Life and Other Dirty Jokes", to see what he's been up to since the "Willie" book. It's a hoot..sort of a grass-roots type of wisdom, interjected with lots of "mind-f.r.ts" and takes on his varied accumulation of friends and family, to date. Better buy it too, while you're at it...for dessert.

strong book
not only do I dig&respect Willie Nelson as a Artist but also His Down to Earth Vibe.this Book Reflects on that&so much more.He has a Mellow but to the point way of saying stuff like He did in this Book.He is a song within a Song in this Book.

Best damn bio of a country music star I've ever read!
Like Outlaw Willie himself this book does not stick to conventional writing; rather it is structured like a song, with the "melody" supplied by Willie and the "chorus" by his friends. May the publisher see fit to put it back on the shelves someday soon

Winning!: Using Lawyers' Courtroom Techniques to Get Your Way in Everyday Situations
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall Trade (May, 1997)
Author: Noelle C. Nelson
Average review score:

Convince everybody!
Ever notice how some people seem to always get their way, even though they're (arguably)"wrong". This book will teach you how! This is not a Machiacelliv book, but it will certainly teach you how to relate with other people in a way that makes them empathize with your cause and agree with you. Once you've learned this, you can use the knowledge to win trials, close a business deal, get a promotion, bargain, or simply relate to the world in general in a way that will make everyone love you!

From posture to body language, argumentation, organization of thought, etc., this book really works! Did you know, for example, that people believe body language over your actual words because they think that is more natural? So learn to control your body language, learn the "social stereotypes" and you're off to manipulate everyone into agreeing with you!

Also check "What would Machiavelli Do?" By Stanley Bing, "The 48 Laws of Power" by R. Greene and J. Elffers, and "The Prince" by Machiavelli

Excellent book!
As a lawyer, I can tell you that this book will teach you how to negotiate and convince people. It will tell you how to stand and gesture so that you are perceived as an authoritative person, if you want, or as naive if that's what the situation requires. A great book which will be extremely helpful to everyone, and a must-have for lawyers, businessmen and politicians.

Great for the general public and for law students
As a student entering my third year of law school, I find my trial classes to be the most exciting. Noelle Nelson's book is giving me an edge over my other classmates, and I expect the same results when I enter practice. If it works in the legal environment just imagine how effective it can be when the techniques are used in the general public!

I LOVE this book!
When I read this book I couldn't believe how honest is was. What courage it must have taken for Ms. Nelson to write the story of her life: the story of her abusefull childhood and her struggles to overcome her confusion and pain, and her determination to overcome it with love and forgiveness. Her experience and her message showed me how to deal with my own anger and hurt and, more importantly, gave me the courage to try. Thank you for such a great book!
